Betting on Pro Sports
Unlike college sports, where the only bets tend to be made on football and men’s basketball, every pro sports competition is fair game when it comes to sports betting. Las Vegas offers futures betting and propositions wagers. Futures betting is wagering on the outcome of a sports season. Each team is given certain odds on its probability of winning various championships or projected finishes. Other futures betting can include efforts by individual players, like who will throw the most touchdown passes in a season. While wagers are supposed to involve the outcome of athletic contests (meaning there is no wagering on elections, reality shows, or post-season awards), there can be proposition bets that wager on contests within a contests. Football proposition bets, for example, can include who scores the first touchdown in a Monday Night Football game or how many field goals will be kicked in a game. Betting on Auto Racing Not only is NASCAR becoming a favorite spectator sport nationally, its popularity in the Las Vegas sports books is on the rise. The most basic bet in auto racing is picking the winner. The drivers, usually a minimum of 20 but often more, are listed by the sports book, with the odds on each individual racer’s chance of winning. Another way to wager in racing is by pitting two drivers head-to-head. The driver with the better finish provides the winning bet. Betting on Golf Golf, like auto racing, is a hot sport in Las Vegas sports books. Like auto racing, the basic bet is picking the winner of a tournament out of the 30 or so players listed on the board. Match ups between individual golfers are another popular way to wager on golf. The betting line is set by the oddsmaker, and the golfer with the lower score is the winner. These match us can be done with two golfers or with a foursome. Betting on Boxing Boxing is another popular sport to bet on. The winner of the bout is the winner in the sports book. The odds of one’s chances of winning determine how much the bettor will win. Boxing often features a number of money line proposition wagers, like win by a knock out, number of rounds the fight will go, and draws. |
